ALUMNAE PROFILES

Dear Friends,
I am the author of the novel THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET, a book that is required reading at several schools across the country. But back in 1968 when I entered Josephinum as a freshman, my writing was something I kept secret. Josephinum became a home in the heart for me.

I have my English teachers to thank for helping to nurture me as a writer and performer--Sister Giovanni, Ms. Elizabeth Dacenko, Sister Barbara, and my drama teacher. It was this team who encouraged me to write, publish and perform publicly, and it was Josephinum that made 'me feel safe enough to do so.

I would also like to honor the memory of Sister Virginella, who recruited me into the Red Cross Society. The lesson of giving to others began here and has stayed with me and enriched my life.

When I was a student at the Jo, it took all my courage to speak in front of the class. Now my writing takes me across the country and across the globe, and I feel at home everywhere.

I thank my early education at Josephinum and I thank my teachers for guiding me on my path as a writer, political activist, spiritual artist, public speaker, and philanthropist. I didn't know back then how important a small, private high school would be to my development, but I know now. A thousand thanks to all who helped this writer get started.

Abrazos Fuertes,
Sandra Cisneros
