Service Learning

Josephinum Academy’s Service Learning Program provides a unique opportunity for students to grow in their personal journey of self-discovery and their relationship with God. The program is inspired by the five goals of the Sacred Heart Network and the International Baccalaureate Creativity, Action, and Service Requirements. Josephinum offers intentional School Service Projects every month for Freshmen and Sophomores and guides Junior and Senior students to find an experience that will be meaningful to their spiritual and intellectual growth. Our service learning model provides opportunities that nourish students and combines both action and reflection, acknowledging that each Josephinum student is called to be challenged in a different way.

Sacred Heart Network Summer Service Trips

As a member of the Sacred Heart Network, Josephinum Academy is able to provide students with the opportunity to participate in over a dozen national and international summer service trips with our sister Sacred Heart schools. In the past, our girls have travelled to upstate New York to work on a rural farm, to New Orleans to assist with communities recovering from Hurricane Katrina, to North Dakota Indian Reservations, and much more. Internationally, students have travelled to Peru and Taiwan, and we are continuing to build wonderful relationships with schools across the world. MIKVA Challenge

As part of the Junior curriculum, students do additional service hours through the Issues to Action program with Mikva Challenge. Through this program, they join over 1,000 other high school students to engage in civic action projects. Students follow a six-step process that begins with analyzing their community and identifying an issue, and ends with the creation and implementation of an action plan. This program empowers students with the opportunity and skills to make positive changes in their community. In January 2008, six students traveled to the New Hampshire Primary with the Elections in Action program of Mikva Challenge.

Projects have included spreading awareness about human sex trafficking, improving the school lunch program, and providing outdoor classroom space. For more information on MIKVA Challenge, click here.
