Real World Learning

Real-world learning engages with our broader Chicago community and is designed to connect student achievement with long-term life success. It is learning that is active, applied, and grounded in exposing students to a variety of people and activities outside the walls of Josephinum. With these new accomplishments, students become empowered with the skills to navigate college and a career, and the confidence to network and grow, laying a critical foundation for future success.

A day in the life of Jo girls

Why Real World Learning?

In today’s world we recognize that a life-changing education is not just memorizing a text book or learning academic principles. We remain committed to our rigorous college-preparatory curriculum, our Sacred Heart values and our educational focus on the “whole” student—preparing our graduates for college and a career. At the Jo we are broadening what an education means and expanding its impact. By adding unique experiences that expand beyond the walls of our school, real-world learning has a tangible value. We are empowering our young women by providing early access to hands-on career exploration and networks. We add to the breadth of the high school experience, providing a solid foundation for students to enter the "real world".

Real World Learning Opportunities at the Jo

While we are getting creative with "virtual" RWL opportunities this school year, Josephinum has offered a number of experiences including a career development/internship program to provide students with hands-on experience at partner organizations. We invite professionals to the Jo to speak about career path and look to partner organizations to offer industry tours and workshops (online for now) for students to experience different types of professions. We are also planning a mentor program providing one-on-one support for students interested in a specific field.

Ours is a multi-faceted approach requiring significant outreach and participation across the community. We’re looking for organizations of all kinds to join our excitement in bringing real-world learning to countless young women at Josephinum. As an individual or someone in a company, non-profit organization, service provider or government agency, we look to you.

  • Consider a student as an intern for your organization or maybe you’d like a representative to come and speak at the school
  • Host a group of our students for a tour of your office or facility and an exploration of your roles.
  • Speak to our girls about your organization or host a workshop
  • Volunteer as a subject matter expert and be a student mentor
  • Sponsor our real-world education effort with a donation of any amount
