Our Commitment to Equality

As a “Jo” community, we are devastated by the tragic killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the many others who came before them. The heartbreaking, violent actions that led to their deaths rock our core belief that we are all created equally in God's image. These events only reinforce that we must immediately intensify our efforts to act for equality and justice, because Black Lives Matter.

We thank everyone who was able to join our Community Town Hall Meeting on May 31st. Your thoughts and feedback will influence Josephinum’s plan to assemble a more cohesive curriculum that educates and builds awareness of the issue of equality for people of color. These additions will be included in our studies, for the upcoming school year and beyond.

Josephinum Academy is committed to the five goals and criteria of a Sacred Heart education. And in today’s troubled times we truly see their relevance and how important they are, not only to education, but to build a better world. As a Sacred Heart school, we educate to:

  1. A personal and active faith in God
  2. A deep respect for intellectual values
  3. A social awareness which impels to action
  4. The building of community as a Christian value
  5. Personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom

In the tradition of our Sacred Heart goals three and four, a social awareness that impels to action and the building of community as a Christian value, we want to provide the opportunity to create a cohesive voice to campaign for justice and an end to police brutality and systemic racism. To learn more about how you can make a difference in your community and beyond, or to get a deeper understanding of the fight against racism in America, please take advantage of the resources below.

Our focus at Josephinum Academy is on the social-emotional wellbeing, health, and safety of our students and community members during this time. Our Jo community has endured and overcome many challenges this year. We are very proud of our accomplishments. However, we must all continue to challenge ourselves and join the fight for necessary change in our country. Community Legislator Letter Writing Campaign

We urge you to contact your local and national legislators that work for you, from the President to your local alderman. We want to send as many messages to our government officials as we can so they know what the people who are voting demand of them or they will lose our support.
